The golden Age of Rally

Fiat X1/9 Abarth Prototipo

In 1974, Fiat and Abarth decided to develop a new lightweight rally car with a mid-rear engine. This led to the Fiat X1/9 Abarth project, which was entrusted to Gino Macaluso, who coordinated the work of the engineers and test driver Giorgio Pianta. Pending homologation in Group 4, the X1/9 competed as a prototype and won numerous rallies in the Italian Championship, demonstrating exceptional competitive potential. Due to the oil crisis and Fiat's desire to promote mass-produced models, the X1/9 Abarth project was halted at the end of 1974.

The car on display took part in the Giro d'Italia Automobilistico driven by Formula 1 driver Clay Regazzoni alongside co-driver Gino Macaluso, and a few weeks later won the Rally Coppa Liburna with Maurizio Verini and Angelo Torriani.
