In the mid-1960s, Ford and Lotus collaborated on the creation of the Ford Cortina Lotus. Lotus developed a powerful 4-cylinder engine, initially intended for sports car racing (Lotus 23) and later used with great success on the Cortina, both on track and in rallying. The Cortina's most notable international rally victories came at the Rally dei Fiori (Italy), the Acropolis Rally (Greece) and the RAC Rally (Great Britain).
The car on display competed in the 1966 Rallye de Monte-Carlo but, together with all the cars from the official Ford and Mini teams, was sensationally excluded from the final classification due to an irregularity in the headlight intensity adjustment system - a feature with absolutely no bearing on the cars' performance during the race. Also in 1966, this very car won the RAC Rally, driven by the Söderström/Palm crew.
