Following its successes in 1987, 1988 and 1989, the Lancia Delta HF won the 1990 World Manufacturers' Championship, securing victory in six world championship rounds: the prestigious Monte Carlo Rally, the Rally of Portugal, the Tour de Corse, the Rally of Argentina, the Rally of Australia and the Sanremo Rally. The car on display finished first overall in the 1990 Sanremo Rally, driven by Didier Auriol and Bernard Occelli.
It was a fiercely contested race, remembered for its constant twists and turns and changes in the leading positions, across the tarmac of the Ligurian hinterland and the gravel roads of Tuscany.
With Auriol's victory in Sanremo, Lancia secured the final precious points needed to clinch the Manufacturers' title. The same car continued to compete and win in the 1991 Italian Championship, driven by Piergiorgio Deila in the colours of the Astra team.
