The Lancia Stratos is celebrated for its timelessly futuristic styling and its extraordinary string of successes, but above all, it was the first car designed specifically to win rallies. Of all the Stratos models produced, the example on display has a unique history: initially, its chassis was prepared to compete in the 1976 Giro d'Italia Automobilistico; in that first configuration, the bodywork featured large spoilers, the engine was turbocharged and the livery bore the colours of the sponsor, Marlboro. At the wheel was Raffaele Pinto, with Arnaldo Bernacchini as co-driver. The following year, the bodywork was adapted for rally use, with a naturally aspirated engine. It competed in the Monte Carlo Rally, sporting Alitalia livery, again driven by Pinto and Bernacchini. Subsequently, it was driven by other great champions such as Munari, Röhrl, Bettega and Bacchelli.
