The Mini Cooper S revolutionised the world of rallying because, thanks to its extreme lightness and manoeuvrability, it dominated the most important road races of its time, proving that even a small-engined, affordable car could be transformed into a racing car capable of beating far more powerful models. The car on display competed in the Monte Carlo Rally in 1966 and, in 1967, won the 1000 Lakes Rally in Finland, driven by the Mäkinen/Keskitalo crew. It was a memorable victory because, following the breakage of the bonnet latch, the driver was forced to drive for many kilometres without being able to see the road, hidden behind the wide-open bonnet. It was a balancing act, particularly due to the massive bumps and the resulting very long jumps that characterise the great Finnish race.
