The Golden Age of Rallye

Toyota Celica GT-4 ST165

The Toyota Celica ST165 reached the peak of its competitiveness in 1990 and 1991, thanks to the team and the rising star of world rallying, the Spanish driver Carlos Sainz, who during those years challenged the established order that had prevailed in the rallying world for decades. Sainz was the first driver of Latin origin to make his mark in races such as the 1000 Lakes Rally or the RAC Rally in Great Britain, which had always been dominated by drivers from Northern Europe. The car on display is a key figure in the history of the Toyota Celica GT-Four: it is the car in which Sainz and his talented co-driver Moya won the 1990 RAC Rally, a landmark event as it marked the first victory for a Southern European crew at the Rally of Great Britain. In 1991, the same crew won another world championship event in this car: the New Zealand Rally.
